23rd August 2009: Latest News Round-Up

National Juvenile Inter-County & Strokeplay Finals @ Portmarnock
Following the heroics of the Offaly Juvenile Team last weekend winning the Leinster Championships the youngsters travelled to Portmarnock, Dublin, for the National Championships this weekend. However they could not repeat their fine performances at Kilbeggan and finished down the leader board. Captain Brian Doyle lead by example in blustery conditions and shot a good 2 under par 106. Other scores by the team were as follows: Dylan Melia 113, David Newman 113, Patrick Fleming 117, Liam Huson 113. Cork ran out the eventual winners of the National Juvenile Inter-County Championships adding it to their recent Munster victory. They shot an impressive total of 26 under par to win by 11 shots from Kerry. The National Juvenile Strokeplay finals also took place at the weekend at Portmarnock and Offaly had 3 representatives, all from Tullamore. Best of the three was Liam Huson who shot an impressive 5 under par which seen him finish joint sixth for the championship. Dylan Melia finished on 6 over par and Gary Pyke finished on 4 over par. The championship was decided in exciting fashion as 3 players finished on 97 (11 under par) to force a 9 hole playoff. Dean Reid (CPM), Brian Maloney (Majestic) and Christopher O'Sullivan (Pfizer). They shot level par, 3 under and 2 under par respectively in the playoff for Brian Maloney to pull off a national win. Well done to our Offaly team and to Dylan, Gary and Liam who performed well at the weekend at Portmarnock.

Joe Pyke Memorial Scratch Cup @ Tullamore
Congratulations to Anthony Galvin who pulled off a fantastic win at the weekend on home soil. Anthony won the Joe Pyke Memorial Scratch Cup at Tullamore with an aggregate score of 25 under par following a playoff with Erry's young gun Graham Newman who also finished on 25 under after 54 holes. It was an exciting and fitting end to one of the most popular events on the Offaly calendar. The coveted Joe Pyke Memorial Cup will take pride of place in the Galvin household alongside young Amy's recently claimed Leinster Girls Strokeplay Cup!!
