Erry Honour Provincial Champions of 2008

First and foremost the club would like to congratulate the Erry team who recently won the inaugural Erry v Tullamore Ryder Cup Challenge in fine style. The team were as follows: William Buckley Jnr., Billy Buckley (Capt.), Joseph McGrath Jnr., Joe McGrath, Larry Maher Jnr, Larry Maher Snr., Tracey McGrath, Mick Devery, Eamonn Kidney, Sean Dunican, Ger Walsh, Joe Egan and James Walsh (Manager). The team were neck and neck with Tullamore on 10 points each following four weeks of Doubles Matchplay games going into the final day’s play of 12 Singles Matchplay games. Fine performances by all our players produced some great games and essentially vital wins and points. Erry secured 7.5 points in the Singles to win on an aggregate score of 17.5 to Tullmore’s 14.5. Three Erry players went unbeaten over the five weeks and this created and defined the possibility of an Erry victory; Larry Maher Snr. and Jnr. collected a full 5 points each while Joe McGrath Jnr. collected 4.5 points. It proved to be a very successful and enjoyable competition that is sure to be highly anticipated in the years to come. Well done to all involved especially William Buckley Jnr. and Snr. (Erry) and Mick Hogan (Tullamore) who made this event a reality.

Erry Pitch & Putt Club held a celebration and awards night was held recently in Dolan’s Bar in Clara, to honour the club’s 2008 prolific Leinster Title Champions. This has become almost an annual event on the calendar now which is contributed to the club’s consistency at provincial and national levels of the game. This is a fantastic feat for such a small club that boasts four Leinster Titles for 2008. On the night William Buckley Jnr. and Tracey McGrath were honoured on another fantastic Senior Leinster Matchplay titles double in their respective Gents and Ladies grades which were hosted at Erry this year. This follows the duo’s 2007 double win at the Leinster Senior Ladies and Gents Stokeplay. Tracey was also honoured for her remarkable win at McDonagh when she retained her Leinster Strokeplay title following a 9 hole play-off this year also. She then partnered up with her brother Joseph to retain their Leinster Mixed Foursomes title in Tullamore in September. This was a fine achievement for two Senior players who were in a field of high handicappers but the near home advantage came to the fore as Joseph pitched their way impressively to victory. The Erry pair fell 2 shots short of retaining their National Mixed Foursomes title two weeks later. However, it was a fine overall performance by the club at provincial level in particular, which we hope will transfer into national levels in 2009! A great night was had by all.

Dates for your diary: The first Offaly Alliance commences on Sunday January 4th in Erry at 1.30p.m. The Offaly Co. Board A.G.M. will be held on Wednesday January 7th in Tullamore Pitch & Putt Club at 8p.m. sharp. All are welcome and encouraged to attend.
